Dry Eye or MGD?

Approximately 30 million people in the United States alone and over 300 million worldwide have been diagnosed with dry eye.

Traditionally, people with dry eye have been offered temporary relief through eye drops and other treatment techniques. However, eye doctors have only recently recognized that the root cause of most dry eye cases (86%) is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

MGD is caused by a blockage of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the protective oily layer of the tear film. This prevents them from making the necessary oils for healthy tears, leading to fast tear evaporation.

How is MGD Diagnosed?

MGD is diagnosed using various tests, such as LipiView® tear film and gland imaging tests and a meibomian gland evaluation. They help identify the underlying cause of dry eye, allowing the eye doctor to recommend the most suitable treatment option.

Treating MGD with LipiFlow

LipiFlow® is an innovative treatment option designed to address dry eye by restoring the tear film's oily layer, improving tear function.

Although there are many treatment choices available for managing MGD, LipiFlow® stands out as the only FDA-approved treatment specifically designed to eliminate gland blockages and restore optimal gland function.

Developed by TearScience, this procedure uses a sterile lid warmer and eyecup to apply gentle heat and pressure to the eyes for about 15 minutes. The procedure is comfortable and virtually painless, allowing the tear glands to produce high-quality tears.
